Typing speed test
Sixty seconds, common words, standard scoring. Start typing and the clock starts with you.
Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated?
The standard definition: every 5 correctly typed characters (including spaces) counts as one word, divided by elapsed minutes. This keeps "the cat" and "extraordinarily" from counting the same.
What is a good typing speed?
Average typists land around 40 WPM. Office fluency is 60 to 70, fast typists cross 90, and competitive typists exceed 120 with high accuracy. Accuracy below about 95% usually costs more time than raw speed gains.
Do mistakes lower my score?
Yes, in two ways: wrong characters do not count toward WPM, and the accuracy figure shows the share of keystrokes that were correct. Fixing errors costs time, so smooth beats frantic.
Why common words instead of quotes?
Random common words remove memory and punctuation from the equation, measuring raw keyboard skill. Quote tests reward familiarity with the passage as much as typing.
